This Tilley hat is great! For years I was wearing a wool fedora. I was hesitant to pay this much for a hat but when I received it and started to wear it I was amazed how much warmer this fur hat is over the wool hat I was wearing. This alone is well worth the money. Keep in mind also that it has built in earwarmers. I can’t say that I’ve needed them yet, but I have tried them out and I think they might be handy under the right conditions and will be thankful if the need arises.
As far as styling is concerned, I think this hat is perfect for me. I have received many compliments since wearing this hat and not just from my friends who are use to seeing me wearing my old wool fedora. The first day I was wearing the hat I was walking by a building and a doorman yelled at me and came out and complimented me on the hat and wanted to know all about it and where I bought it. A women who I hadn’t seen in a while and after we greeted just looked up at the hat and gave that very audible, you know, with a smile, “Heyyyyyy…..”
I would describe the styling on the hat as not extreme and not trendy, if you know what I mean. I figure that since I’ve never been to the Austrialian outback, nor have I ever roped a cow, nor have ever gunned down a rival gangster, it would be inappropriate for me to wear a hat as if I have done any of these things. In my opinion the hat has a very professional, understated, confident and refined look. Again, well worth the money.
The only bad thing about the hat is the Tilley metal logo clip that can not be removed. I don’t like wearing manufacturer’s labels. Not my thing. However, the clip is sufficiently understated and does not have lettering on it, just the Tilley logo which because it is so small I can live with it. The hat also comes with a small feather that has bright multi colors. I don’t wear the feather because of the clip. That would be too much for me. If it didn’t have the Tilley metal clip, maybe I would wear the feather.
Finally, what I also especially like about the hat is that it is crushable!!! (within reason, of course) You don’t have to worry about it getting knocked around out of shape when throwing it on the self of a closet or in the back of a car. The crusability is also helpful in restaurants where attendants these days don’t know what to do with a customer with a fedora (forgive me for being politically incorrect, but it would be nice to have waiters or waitresses in somewhat “hat check girl” mode). The crusability is also helpful in theaters when you simply can put the hat on your lap and not worry about creasing it or being uncomfortable throughout the performance with a hat on your lap (does anyone know any theaters that still have the wire hat frames below the seats?).
Another thing about the hat is that I’ve worn it in the wind and my recollection is that if I was in the same wind with my old wool fedora, I would be holding on. Not with this hat. Mybe it’s just my imagination but I believe that this Tilley hat sits better on my head.
Finally, Tilley offers some sort of insurance with the hat. It’s supposed to work that if you lose the hat, Tilley will sell you another for half prince. As with all insurance, I hope I never need to use it!
